3 Easy Garbage Disposal How To Tips

Discover some fix garbage disposal how to tips and learn how easy it is to keep your appliance running smoothly. Find out what to do when your appliance will not turn on, will not shred garbage, or drains slowly. Also, learn two simple tricks that can help keep your garbage disposal operating at its best.

The first thing to always remember when working on a garbage disposal is, by no means ever put your hand inside the component. It can be unplugged, turned off, and the breaker switch turned off, you still never put your hand inside. Doing it once with no incident can make a person feel safe enough to do it again which can result in injury.

One thing that happens often, is the unit will not turn on.

You flip the switch and nothing happens, there is no humming, no sound, nothing. Check the plug and make certain it is plugged in. If the plug is secure, then try the reset button. If that still does not work, check the electrical panel to find out if the breaker has been switched off. If none of these suggestions resolves the problem, then either the switch or the disposal needs to be replaced.

Sometimes the unit will turn on but instead of shredding garbage it will just hum, which means the flywheel is stuck.

Something has wrapped itself around the the shredder ring and impeller which is preventing the flywheel from turning. To solve this, first turn off the power to the component. Then insert a wooden broom handle in the drain and apply pressure to the impeller. When the flywheel dislodges, you will be able to feel it turn.

Another solution is to use the offset wrench that came with the component when it was purchased. After turning the power to the unit off, insert the wrench into the hole you will find on the bottom side of the appliance. Turn it clockwise and you should feel the wheels free themselves. Press the reset button and run some water into the unit. After a few moments, turn it on and let it run long enough to shred the item that had jammed it.

Clogs and slow drains can also occur.

First, never apply chemical drain cleaners to the garbage disposal as it will damage it. Turn off the power to the unit then remove its discharge pipe and the drain trap. Remove any grease build up or other obstructions in the line. If you cannot see any, then the obstruction is behind the wall and you will need to use an auger to free it.

There are two things you can do to keep your component running smoothly. One is to put ice cubes in the drain and turn the unit on. Shredding the ice will sharpen the blades while it clears away build up. Another thing that will help your unit run efficiently is to let one cup of vinegar stand inside it for an hour. Run very hot water and any muck that has built up will wash down the drain.

These simple fix garbage disposal how to tips do not take much time and practically no money.

Combined with the two maintenance tips, your unit should run smoothly for years. Remember also to never put your hands into the unit and never use chemical drain cleaners on the units.
